PushEngage vs Firebase Cloud Messaging:
a delivery pipe, or the marketing layer on top?
Firebase Cloud Messaging is free, reliable delivery for developers. PushEngage runs on the same APNs and FCM delivery and adds what marketing needs: opt-in prompts, segments, Workflows, A/B tests, and revenue reporting, without an engineering ticket per campaign.
75,000+ businesses Prices published for every tier 14-day money-back guarantee
Reliability and trust
Keep the delivery you trust. Add the layer you are missing.
PushEngage is not a new pipe. The native SDKs deliver through APNs on iOS and FCM on Android, and the marketing layer sits on top.
The cost of free, made visible
FCM does not bill for sends. The bill arrives as engineering time: the opt-in flow, the token store, the segment logic, the scheduler, the reports. PushEngage prices that layer on the page.
- Published tiers billed on active subscribers
- No per-message fees; a monthly sending volume per plan
- Free plan for 1 site and 200 subscribers
- 14-day money-back guarantee on paid plans
Send controls that protect the channel
Browsers now throttle senders who over-message. Cap how often each subscriber hears from a triggered campaign and send in their timezone.
- Daily and weekly frequency caps on triggered campaigns, Growth and above
- Quiet hours inside Workflows
- Subscriber-timezone sending on Premium and above
GDPR and CCPA in the defaults
Every subscription is a browser or device permission grant. Add a pre-permission consent overlay where your audience needs one.
- Configurable pre-permission overlay per site
- One-click unsubscribe at the device level
Built for engineers who want marketing off their queue
Your developers integrate once. After that, marketers work in the dashboard, and anyone who prefers an assistant can run the account from Claude or Cursor.
- REST API and five SDKs on every plan, webhooks on Growth
- First-party MCP server for Claude, Claude Code, and Cursor
- Open-source Agent Skills for the iOS, Android, Flutter, and React Native SDKs
- AI Copywriter drafts notifications when you want it (add-on on paid plans)
Support that scales with the plan
Standard email support on Business, priority email and chat on Premium, VIP onboarding with your first campaign set up on Growth, and a dedicated success manager on Enterprise.

The 30-second version
Not either-or. A question of who sends.
FCM moves a message from your server to a device. PushEngage decides who gets which message and when, then hands it to APNs and FCM. The right answer depends on whether engineering or marketing owns push.
Engineers own push and have the time
FCM delivery is no-cost. If your developers already send from your own server and nobody on marketing needs to touch it, keep it.
Transactional messages from your backend
Chat alerts, sync signals, and data messages are what FCM is built for. Keep those on FCM even if marketing moves.
Marketing wants to send without a ticket
Segments, Workflows, A/B tests, eCommerce automations, and revenue reporting in a dashboard, running on the same APNs and FCM delivery underneath.
Web push and app push from one place
Opt-in prompts, browser push on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, and app push on one subscriber profile, plus in-app, WhatsApp, and chat.
Side by side
Firebase Cloud Messaging and PushEngage, row by row.
Every Firebase cell comes from Firebase’s own pricing page and documentation, checked on September 30, 2026. Where Firebase does the job, the table says so.
| Firebase Cloud Messaging | PushEngage | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A cross-platform messaging solution for Android, iOS, and web, sending notification or data messages with a payload of up to 4,096 bytes. | A retention product that sends web push, app push, and in-app messages, built on APNs and Firebase Cloud Messaging for delivery. |
| Price | No-cost on both the Spark and Blaze plans. Services you run around it, such as Cloud Functions, need the pay-as-you-go Blaze plan past its no-cost quota. Free to send | Free plan for 1 site, 200 subscribers, 30 campaigns. Paid tiers bill on active subscribers, from $1,020 a year at 20,000 subscribers at renewal. |
| Who sends | Your app server or Cloud Functions through the Admin SDK or the HTTP v1 API. After developers build the receiving logic, non-technical users can send from the Notifications composer. | Marketers from the dashboard, the Chrome and Firefox extension, or an AI assistant over MCP. Engineers from the REST API. |
| Targeting | Single devices, device groups, and topics from the API. The composer adds targeting by app version, language, browser, user properties, and Analytics audiences. | Dynamic segments by behavior, URL, geography, device, and purchase activity, plus audience groups such as active subscribers. |
| Web push opt-in | You add the service worker file, generate a VAPID key, call the browser permission request in your code, and serve the site over HTTPS. | A no-code opt-in prompt builder with time, scroll, and click triggers. Plugins for WordPress, WooCommerce, and Shopify generate the rest. No code |
| Automation | Build multi-step sequences in your own server code or Cloud Functions. | Workflows on every plan with wait and decision steps; Split Path on Premium and above. Cart abandonment, browse abandonment, price drop, and back in stock on Growth. |
| In-app messages | Firebase In-App Messaging, no-cost, for iOS, Android, and Flutter: cards, banners, modals, and images with triggers. More platforms today | Top banner, bottom banner, center modal, and full screen, from the Business plan. Shipping first in the Android SDK. |
| A/B testing | Firebase A/B Testing runs messaging experiments at no cost. | Intelligent A/B tests on Premium and above pick the winner on click rate and send it to everyone else. |
| eCommerce | No store plugin or cart templates in the FCM documentation. Your team wires store events to sends. | Shopify and Shopify Plus app, WooCommerce plugin, order updates, and per-campaign revenue attribution with goal tracking on Premium and above. |
| Other channels | Push only. Email and SMS need other products. | WhatsApp automation on the Meta Cloud API (Growth plan and above) and a chat widget with 21 channels plus custom links, in the same dashboard. |
| Support | Stack Overflow for code questions, community groups, and a support case form. | Email support on Business, priority email and chat on Premium, VIP onboarding on Growth, and a dedicated success manager on Enterprise. |

The cost of free
FCM delivers the message. Someone still has to build the rest.
Here is what a marketing push program needs, and who provides each piece. The Firebase Notifications composer covers the basics: scheduled sends in the recipient’s local time zone and conversion-event tracking. Everything marked “You build it” is engineering time your team maintains every time a browser or OS changes.
Opt-in experience
The prompt, its timing, its design, and the rules for who sees it.
Subscriber store and segments
Where tokens, attributes, and behavior live, and how segments stay current.
Scheduling and timezones
Send at 9 AM in each subscriber’s timezone, cap frequency, respect quiet hours.
Journeys
Welcome series, cart recovery, win-backs, with waits and branches.
eCommerce triggers
Cart, browse, price drop, back in stock, and order updates from your store.
Revenue reporting
Which notification drove which order, per campaign and per workflow.
Composer and preview
A place marketing can write, preview, and schedule without a deploy.
Delivery to devices
The pipe to Android, iOS, and browsers.
Pricing
Free delivery against a published price for the layer.
FCM costs nothing to send. PushEngage costs what is shown below at the standard annual renewal rate you pay from year two. First-year pricing is lower, from $8 a month billed yearly. The real comparison is this price against your engineering time.
The growing store
20,000 active subscribers, web and app combined
delivery at no cost; the marketing layer is yours to build$0
lowest plan that fits, standard annual renewal, billed yearly$1,020/yr
adds cart, browse, price drop, back in stock$1,828/yr
If engineering time is free for you, FCM wins here.
The established brand
50,000 active subscribers, web and app combined
delivery at no cost; the marketing layer is yours to build$0
lowest plan that fits, standard annual renewal, billed yearly$1,920/yr
adds cart, browse, price drop, back in stock$3,489/yr
Compare the renewal price with a few weeks of engineering time a year.
The multi-site retailer
100,000 active subscribers, web and app combined
delivery at no cost; the marketing layer is yours to build$0
lowest plan that fits, standard annual renewal, billed yearly$4,412/yr
adds cart, browse, price drop, back in stock$6,258/yr
At this size the cost of free is the team that maintains it.
PushEngage prices are the standard annual renewal rate for each plan at that subscriber cap, from the live plans API on September 30, 2026. Taxes excluded. See the pricing page for the calculator, or our Firebase push notification pricing guide for what running push on Firebase costs.
Where we will not pretend
Three things a fair FCM comparison says out loud.
- FCM is free and it works. PushEngage’s own Android delivery runs on it. If your engineers own push and have the time, there is no reason to pay for a layer you do not use.
- Firebase is more than FCM. The Notifications composer, In-App Messaging, and A/B Testing are no-cost and cover part of what marketers ask for, on apps, including scheduled sends in the recipient’s local time zone and conversion events. The gaps are segmentation depth, Workflows, web opt-in UX, cart and browse triggers, and per-campaign revenue.
- Our in-app messaging is newer. Firebase In-App Messaging supports iOS, Android, and Flutter today. PushEngage in-app ships first in the Android SDK.
What the layer includes
What your marketing team gets on top of FCM delivery.
Every paid tier includes web and app push on one subscriber profile, Workflows, behavior-based segmentation, and Inactive Subscriber Cleanup. Premium adds goal tracking and timezone sending. Growth adds triggered campaigns with frequency caps and the eCommerce automations.
One composer for the browser and the lock screen
Write it once and send it to Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari, and to iOS and Android, from the same screen. One audience, one report.
- Native SDKs for iOS, Android, React Native, and Flutter on every plan
- Live preview per platform, plus AI-powered campaigns (add-on on paid plans)
- Scheduling and recurring sends, with timezone delivery on Premium and above
eCommerce automations you switch on
Order received, on hold, cancelled, shipped, plus cart abandonment. Each is a ready campaign behind a toggle, and each reports the revenue it brought back.
- Cart and browse abandonment, price drop, and back in stock on Growth
- Order and shipping updates that answer where-is-my-order before the ticket
- Goal tracking on Premium and above ties revenue to the campaign that earned it
Workflows: wait, decide, split, act
A drag-and-drop canvas for welcome series, cart recovery, and win-backs. Branch on behavior, then send, move the subscriber to a segment, fire an HTTP request (Growth), or start another workflow (Premium and above).
- Wait and Decision steps on every plan; Split Path on Premium and above
- HTTP request and custom event actions on Growth
- The builder is on every plan, including Free
Trigger rules your team sets without a ticket
On Growth and above, start a campaign on any event your site or app fires, stop it on another, and cap how often one subscriber hears from you.
- Custom start and stop events from the SDK or REST API
- Daily and weekly frequency capping on triggered campaigns
- UTM parameters added to every click URL
Segments built on active subscribers
Send to everyone, to a saved audience group such as active subscribers, or to a segment by URL, geography, device, or purchase behavior. Groups update themselves.
- Dynamic segments and audience groups without a developer
- Attributes set from the SDK or API for one-to-one copy
- Inactive Subscriber Cleanup keeps the count and the bill honest
A/B tests that pick their own winner
Test two headlines, images, or calls to action on a sample. After the delay you set, the better click rate goes to everyone else.
- Sample size and delay under your control
- Winner chosen on click-through rate
- On Premium and above
Opt-in prompts that earn the Allow click
When the prompt fires matters more than what it says. Trigger it by time on page, scroll depth, or a click, match it to your site, and segment subscribers as they join.
- Popup templates with desktop and mobile previews
- Triggers by time on page, scroll depth, or button click
- Segment on subscribe so the first campaign is already targeted
Start from a template, not a blank field
Broadcast templates by category, each tagged with its own UTM so you can see which style earns the click. Pick one, swap the copy, send.
- Templates for sales, launches, content, and win-backs
- UTM tracking per template for clean attribution
- Blank template when you want full control

Keep FCM for what your backend already sends. Add the PushEngage SDK, and move marketing sends as subscribers register.
One installer for every platform you run
Pick your platform in the dashboard and follow one path for web and mobile. The same App ID initializes every SDK.
- Android, iOS, Flutter, and React Native SDKs
- WordPress, Shopify, HubSpot, AMP, PrestaShop, Wix, or any site
- Service worker and install code generated for web
Add the SDK next to Firebase
Both SDKs can run in the same app. On iOS they use the same APNs token, and you upload the APNs key you already have.
- iOS, Android, Flutter, and React Native SDKs
- Open-source Agent Skills can do the integration with Claude Code or Cursor
- REST API for server-side triggers, webhooks on Growth
Let the base re-register
Permission belongs to your app, so on iOS existing subscribers register with PushEngage on their next launch of the updated build, with no reinstall and no second prompt.
- No reinstall for your users
- New users see your normal permission flow once
- Web push setup checked with our team
Move marketing, keep transactional
Marketing campaigns move to the dashboard. Chat alerts and sync messages can stay on FCM. Remove the Firebase Messaging dependency when you are ready.
- Workflows and segments without an engineering ticket
- Goal tracking on Premium and above
- 14-day money-back guarantee on paid plans

Questions, answered.
Is Firebase Cloud Messaging free?
Yes, sending is no-cost on both the Spark and Blaze plans. The cost is what you build around it. Our Firebase push notification pricing guide breaks it down.
Does PushEngage replace FCM?
Not underneath. PushEngage’s native SDKs are built on APNs and Firebase Cloud Messaging for delivery. What PushEngage replaces is the layer you would otherwise build on top: opt-in prompts, segments, Workflows, A/B tests, eCommerce automations, and reporting.
What is the best Firebase Cloud Messaging alternative for a marketing team?
One that keeps reliable delivery and adds a dashboard marketers can run. PushEngage does that for web push, app push, and in-app messages, with WhatsApp and a chat widget in the same account, at published prices billed on active subscribers.
Can marketers send from Firebase without code?
Partly. Once developers build the receiving logic, the Firebase Notifications composer lets non-technical users send messages with targeting by app version, language, browser, user properties, and Analytics audiences. The composer can schedule sends in the recipient’s local time zone and track conversion events. Deep segmentation, multi-step journeys, cart and browse triggers, web opt-in prompts, and per-campaign revenue still need engineering.
Does Firebase have in-app messaging and A/B testing?
Yes. Firebase In-App Messaging and Firebase A/B Testing are both no-cost, and In-App Messaging supports iOS, Android, and Flutter. PushEngage in-app messaging is on the Business plan and above and ships first in the Android SDK.
Will iOS users see a second permission prompt if we add PushEngage?
No. On iOS, notification permission belongs to your app. When the PushEngage SDK starts in an updated build, existing subscribers register silently on their next launch. Both SDKs can run in the same app while the base moves. The FCM to PushEngage iOS migration guide has the steps.
Can we keep FCM for transactional messages?
Yes, and we recommend it. Keep chat alerts, sync signals, and other backend messages on FCM, and move marketing sends to PushEngage as subscribers register. Removing the Firebase Messaging dependency later is a cleanup task, not a deadline.
What about web push we built on FCM?
Browser subscriptions are tied to the service worker and keys your site registered with, so moving them is a setup question, not a checkbox. Book a demo and our team will check what your current setup allows before you switch.
How much does PushEngage cost compared with free?
The Free plan covers 1 site, 200 subscribers, and 30 campaigns. At standard annual renewal, 20,000 active subscribers is $1,020 a year on Business and 100,000 is $4,412 on Premium. First-year pricing is lower, from $8 a month billed yearly. Compare that with the engineering time the table above lists.
