The Browse Abandonment campaign sends an automated push notification when a subscriber views a product page on your WooCommerce store but leaves without adding the item to their cart. It targets the gap between interest and intent, reaching shoppers who showed clear interest in a product but needed one more nudge.
The campaign is pre-created in PushEngage when you connect your WooCommerce store. This guide covers how to enable it and customize the notification copy.
Before You Start
- PushEngage is installed on your WooCommerce store and connected in the PushEngage dashboard. See How to Connect PushEngage with WooCommerce if you have not yet connected.
- Browse Abandonment campaigns require a PushEngage Growth plan.
How Browse Abandonment Works
When a push subscriber views a product page and leaves without adding the product to their cart, PushEngage detects the event and fires the browse abandonment notification.
The campaign stops automatically for a subscriber as soon as they add the product to their cart or complete a purchase. Browse abandonment and cart abandonment do not overlap – if a subscriber adds to cart after browsing, the browse abandonment stops and cart abandonment takes over.
| Trigger | Campaign fires |
|---|---|
| Subscriber views a product page and exits | Yes |
| Subscriber adds product to cart after viewing | No – browse abandonment stops |
| Subscriber completes a purchase | No |
| Subscriber is not a push subscriber | No |
Step 1: Enable Browse Abandonment
Enable the campaign from the PushEngage Integrations settings.
- Log in to your PushEngage dashboard.
- Go to Settings » Integrations.
- Find the WooCommerce section.
- Toggle Browse Abandonment to on.

- Under Choosing Trigger Campaigns, select the Playbook for Browse Abandonment. Playbooks are pre-built templates that pull product data directly from your store’s product feed. Click Save.
Step 2: Open the Browse Abandonment Campaign
- Go to Campaign » Triggered Campaigns.
- Find the Browse Abandonment campaign in the list and click Edit.

Step 3: Edit the Notification
Click on the first notification in the campaign to edit it.
Available Variables
| Variable | What it inserts |
|---|---|
{productname} | Name of the product the subscriber viewed |
{price} | Listed price of the product |
{notificationurl} | Direct link back to the product page |
{bigimageurl} | Product image |
{imageurl} | Your store logo |
Note: Do not remove these variables. They pull live product data from your WooCommerce store at the time the notification fires.
Recommended Field Settings
| Field | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| URL | Use {notificationurl} to link directly back to the product page |
| Image | Use {bigimageurl} to display the product the subscriber viewed |
Copy Options for Push 1
| Option | Title | Message |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Still thinking about it? | {productname} is waiting for you at {price}. Head back and take another look. |
| 2 | You were eyeing this | {productname} is still available at {price}. Don’t let it slip away. |
| 3 | Left something behind? | You browsed {productname} recently. It is still in stock at {price}. |

Notification Duration
Set the expiry so the notification does not stay in the subscriber’s notification center after it is no longer relevant.
Recommended setting: 24 hours
Enable Keep notification open until user interaction so the push stays visible until the subscriber actively clicks or dismisses it.

Click Save when done.
Step 4: Add a Second Notification (Optional)
For a two-step sequence, click Add Notification at the bottom of the campaign editor. Set the second notification to fire 24 hours after the first.
Copy Options for Push 2
| Option | Title | Message |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | One more look? | {productname} is still available at {price}. Grab it before it sells out. |
| 2 | Still interested in {productname}? | Stock is limited. Come back and add it to your cart today. |
| 3 | We saved your spot | {productname} is still here at {price}. Come back and see if it is right for you. |
Step 5: Set Frequency Capping
Navigate to the Trigger Settings tab in the campaign editor to control how many browse abandonment notifications a subscriber can receive.
| Setting | Recommended Value |
|---|---|
| Daily limit | 1 to 2 notifications per subscriber |
| Weekly limit | 5 notifications per subscriber |
Example: A subscriber who views multiple products in a day should not receive a browse abandonment push for every product. Frequency caps prevent notification overload.
You can also add UTM parameters here to track browse abandonment traffic in Google Analytics.

Step 6: Activate the Campaign
- Click Save in the campaign editor.
- Return to Campaign » Triggered Campaigns.
- Click the Play / Resume button next to the Browse Abandonment campaign.

The campaign is now active. Push subscribers who view a product page and leave without adding it to their cart will automatically receive the notification.
Browse Abandonment vs. Cart Abandonment
Both campaigns target shoppers who leave without purchasing, but they fire at different points in the buying journey.
| Browse Abandonment | Cart Abandonment | |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Subscriber views a product page and exits | Subscriber adds a product to cart and exits |
| Intent level | Lower – browsing, comparing | Higher – has already decided to buy |
| Stop condition | Product added to cart or purchase made | Purchase completed |
| Recommended tone | Soft reminder, curiosity-led | Urgency-focused, recovery-led |
You can run both campaigns simultaneously. They target different moments and do not overlap.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from cart abandonment? Browse abandonment fires when a subscriber views a product but does not add it to their cart. Cart abandonment fires when a subscriber adds a product to their cart but does not complete the purchase. Both can run at the same time without overlapping.
Will a subscriber receive both browse and cart abandonment notifications for the same product? No. If a subscriber views a product (triggering browse abandonment) and then adds it to their cart, the browse abandonment stops and cart abandonment takes over. They will only receive one campaign for that product.
How soon after the subscriber leaves does the notification fire? The notification fires based on the first notification’s timing as set in the campaign. A 15 to 30 minute delay is recommended so you are not interrupting subscribers who are still browsing or comparing options on your site.
Can I show different copy for different product categories? Not within a single campaign. The same template applies to all browse abandonment events. For category-specific messaging, you would need separate trigger campaigns set to different product conditions.
Does this campaign work if the subscriber is on a mobile device? Yes. Push notifications are delivered to all subscribed devices and browsers, including mobile.
